To ensure a smooth recovery and minimize any potential complications following your dental implant placement, it is important to adhere to the post-operative care instructions provided by our dentist and team. Please carefully follow the guidelines outlined below:
- Mouth rinsing: Refrain from rinsing your mouth for the remainder of the day after your procedure.
- Saltwater rinses: Beginning on the day after your procedure, rinse your mouth with warm saltwater every two to three hours. Prepare the solution by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water. Continue this regimen for several days. Afterward, rinse after meals and before bedtime for a duration of two weeks.
- Medications: Take all prescribed medications, including antibiotics and mouthrinses, exactly as directed by your dentist.
- Pain management: Use over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil or ibuprofen to alleviate any discomfort. Follow the recommended dosage guidelines.
- Tooth brushing: You may resume brushing your teeth the day after your procedure. However, be careful to avoid the surgical site for several days as advised by our dentist.
- Temporary crown: If a temporary crown was placed, refrain from biting down until you receive permission from our dentist.
- Dentures and oral appliances: Avoid wearing your denture, partial denture, or any other oral appliance until you are instructed to do so by our dentist.
- Swelling management: Swelling is normal and to be expected. For the first 48 hours, apply ice or cold compresses to the side of your face at 15-minute intervals. After 48 hours, switch to applying heat to the area until the swelling subsides.
- Lip care: Keep your lips moisturized using lip balm or Vaseline to prevent cracking.
- Activity restriction: Refrain from operating machinery for at least 12 hours following your procedure.
- Smoking and tobacco use: Avoid smoking or using tobacco products as they can compromise the success of your implants.
- Loose cover screw or healing abutment: If the cover screw or healing abutment of your implant becomes dislodged, contact our office immediately. Bring the loosened component with you to your appointment.
- Oral contraceptives: If you use oral contraceptives and have been prescribed antibiotics, use an alternate method of birth control until you have completed your full course of antibiotics.
